Daylight Standard Time Meet Mormon Standard Time

Just a reminder, please set your clocks back an hour this Saturday (except for any Arizona readers, you guys continue on).

Years ago I inherited a "smart" alarm clock from my father. The clock automatically sets itself at the beginning and end of Daylight Savings. The problem is, the clock was manufactured before 2005. That was the year that congress passed the Energy Policy Act of 2005 which--among other things--moved the start of Daylight Savings up a couple of weeks in the spring and moved the end of the Daylight Savings back a week in the fall.

The result of the these changes is an alarm clock that moves up and back on the wrong dates. This was a particular problem for me when I had a calling in my ward that required me to make early morning Sunday meetings. Inevitable, I'd show up early one Sunday in the spring and late one Sunday in the fall.

  1. This comic is really funny, good work. My only question is, why do you keep using that clock?

  2. I completely agree with Joel: hilarious comic and I know what I'm going to buy you for Christmas if I draw your name in the VDG family gift exchange.

  3. I probable short changed my clock. It has two separate alarms that can be set for weekdays, the weekend, or throughout the week. It's an FM/AM radio (which now that I play my music on the computer and the iPod is in short supply in my home). And coolest of all, the clock will automatically set itself after there's a power outage or its been unplugged from the wall. For a lazy guy like me, that last feature makes up for any deficiencies.

  5. So many promises for watches and clocks. Next week I'm going to do a post on all the problems I have with my car.
