The Final Victim of the Mission Curse

I was so proud of myself when I first came up with the idea of having all of Elder Van Dyke's companions Dear Johned while serving with him. I thought it would make for a good running joke. What I didn't figure when hatching that idea was the number of different ways I'd have to come up with for companions to get dumped.

Overall, I think I like the idea of the "mission curse" more than I like the execution. I feel like there were some solid jokes associated with it, but I should have made the manner in which Elder Van Dyke's companions were Dear Johned progressively more outrageous.

Avoiding the Mission Curse

This is a really good idea. Keep reading to see if Elder Van Dyke's final companion can be the first to avoid the "mission curse." I've got my doubts.

Mission Curse Redux

When I first started drawing my Mission Daze comic strip, I thought it would be a fun idea to have Elder Van Dyke watch in horror as companion after companion get "dear Johned." After a half dozen or so companions, the challenge became how to tell the same story over and over again without repeating myself. In the end it became quite the chore.

Which is why I'm grateful that I didn't follow through with another idea: to have Elder Van Dyke accrue new girlfriends every time his companions got dumped. (I rejected this idea mostly because I came up with a strip too good not to use.)
