Actually, Jon, the best time to buy a house would have been after the bubble burst. That's assuming you hadn't lost all your savings in the stock market, you weren't a sub-prime mortgage candidate, you trusted a mortgage lender and they trusted you, and...

It's a good comic and still works, especially in Utah. When we took that bus ride up to the new temple I marveled at the scads of great and spacious houses with "for sale" signs affixed, that seemed to be more numerous as we neared the temple site. Seems a bit hypocritical to try to hold to the rod with one hand and speculate in McMansions with the other.
