On Sister Missionaries, Their Hair, and Bike Helmets

I can't imagine how difficult it must be to be a Sister Missionary in a bike area.

  1. There is no comment I can make about this comic that wouldn't get me in trouble with various people. I applaud your willingness to tackle such a politically and socially divisive issue as hair and tardiness among the genders.

  2. All I will say is after I rode a bike for a month I needed some new suit pants. I was very happy when our bikes were stolen.

  3. I was a sister in a bike area and the biggest problem I had were skirts getting caught in the chain! You couldn't have too short a skirt or too tight a skirt otherwise you couldn't peddle, but then the loose enough ones got caught in the chain! Then I served in England where it seemed to rain quite a bit. Rain+Bike+skirt=FUN!

  4. Yeah, I'm with Eric here. I'm surprised I haven't seen any angry comments from former sister missionaries. I, for one, think it's hilarious.

  5. I was one of those sister missionaries in a bike area for 8 months in Salisbury, Maryland at the bottom of the Philly mission back in '93 and '94. I got to experience the humid, hot summers AND humid, freezing cold winters during that time. Lucky me, right?! I took the opportunity to grow out my bangs for the first time in my life in that area and so I always wore it up in a barrette or headband of some kind. So, that took care of the pesky hair issue for the most part. However, not ONCE did we wear helmets. I don't know how that happened, why no one ever mentioned it to us, or why it didn't occur to me. But no one ever told me to and so I never did. Crazy, huh?! Now that I look back on it, I'm sure thankful I never got in a wreck! :)

P.S. My only question is the one I had back then also: Why were the Sisters in the bike area when the Elders had the car? I'm really not bitter, I just never understood that...

P.P.S. Jena, I also think it's hilarious. I figure it's all fair game on this blog. :)

  6. I never had the problem with my dress / skirt getting caught in the chain though. The other sister RM above me probably didn't have the cool button-up-the-front A-line skirts and flower print dresses that I wore back then though. I. looked. AWESOME. ;)

  7. Thanks for all the comments--especially the sister missionary stories.

I failed to disclose when I posted this strip earlier this morning that this gag was inspired from an idea given me by my former sister missionary sister-in-law. She's kind of my go-to person for sister missionary gags.

  8. There's a reason you've never seen my mission pictures...I was in bike areas for 12 months (winter in the Alps was fun!!). At one point I just had my companion chop my hair off to my chin, and then I flipped my head upside down to cut myself layers. Each morning I put a little hair gel on my towl dried layers, and I let the bike helmet and breeze do the rest!

  9. I also biked as a sister, but I had sweaty bangs that stuck out the front holes of the helmet. Note: this is an awesome thing for strangers to stare at when you OYM them. I always wondered why they didn't give a little MTC training on biking in a skirt because for the first month I almost fell over whenever we stopped and started. I do support biking while serving in theMid-west because the members are so nice and feed you a ton. America's dairyland is not calorie free so I was happy to do more than just eat and sit.
