Halloween Tracting

This is the very first gag the New Era ever published of mine. Without this, I doubt my publisher would have taken me serious the first time we met for a book pitch. Without this, I definitely wouldn't have started this blog and if I had, I wouldn't have called it Mormon Cartoonist. (Even as it is, it still seems a bit presumptuous--for the record, I don't see myself as THE Mormon Cartoonist but, rather, a Mormon cartoonist.)

So, please appreciate this week's comic. Sure the art may be a bit off (I mean, I always draw bug eyes, but these are extra buggy!) and it may not be the funniest thing I've ever done, but this is the one that started it all.

  1. Well, you'll always be MY favorite Mormon Cartoonist. Fun to see how it all started in your illustrious career. :)

  3. What kid doesn't have buggy eyes on Halloween night when they see all the candy they're going to get? I think you captured it all perfectly. Great job Mormon Cartoonist, I'm proud of you!

  5. It's like watching one of those old Simpsons cartoons from the Tracy Ulman show where the art is not so crisp and Homer's voice is a little off. Then there were the catch phrases like "eat my shorts" and "do the bartman" I think that means this blog has at least twenty more years to it.

Also, why did you choose pirate costume as a tag instead of witch costume or karate kid costume or even missionary costume? What gives you your ideas for the tags?

  6. Funny you should bring up the Simpsons, Joel, as next week I'm doing a very Treehouse of Horror-ish type of thing and running something a little different for Halloween.

I labeled it Pirate Costume because nobody's going to do a google search for a witch costume.
