A Little Drink

I will never understand how anyone can dispute the value of the Word of Wisdom. I'm aware of the studies that suggest a glass of wine can be good for your heart, but I'd take a strict abstinence from it over the slightest chance that that one drink might lead to something much more serious.

  1. The real point of interest is that Jesus drank wine, and St Paul wrote to Timothy "Take a little wine for your stomach's sake and for your other infirmities" and there are plenty other Biblical references favourable to moderate intake.

Best argument I've heard is that the Word of Wisdom is a new teaching for this dispensation... but this is a commandment that I keep as an act of obedience rather than one of conviction.

  2. Nutrition is very complex and involves so much more than a close look at individual nutrients. I think one of the main purposes of the Word of Wisdom is to help us overcome addiction of all kinds, including sugar (the drug of choice for many of us Mormons!). You may be interested in stories of Mormons who are trying to follow the counsel in D&C 89 more closely, including the counsel that goes beyond the familiar prohibitions. I feature them on this website: http://discoveringthewordofwisdom.com
