Out of Breath

I'm fairly certain this weekend's General Conference will include instruction to improve ourselves. (When has it not, right?) With all the talk about "lengthening our stride" and "hastening the work," let's make sure not to get overwhelmed. Remember this piece of prophetic counsel: "it is not requisite that a man should run faster than he has strength" (Mosiah 4:27). At the same time, let's make sure we're not spiritual couch potatoes.

First Principal, er Principle

Yep, it's another Family Circus-like, kids say the darndest things gag. If I was ever called to the primary, this blog would sink to this level of humor every week.

Nephite GPS

Today's gag is featured in this month's New Era. I'm happy with it because it's two jokes in one. (Even if I plagiarized myself for one of those jokes.)

Hey Jude

Here at Mormon Cartoonist, we're always striving to stay on the cutting edge of everything, which is why today's gag hinges on a song released in 1968.* Look for jokes on Louis XIV and Seward's Folly in the weeks to come.
Incidentally, I have no doubt that this joke has been done somewhere before. "Hey, Jude" is a monster hit from the biggest band ever that's been around for 43 years. Plus, there's nothing here that makes it LDS-specific. But as always with this blog, you get what you pay for.

*"Hey Jude" was written by Paul McCartney to comfort John Lennon's son, Julian, over his parents' divorce. John had recently left his wife to be with Yoko Ono. McCartney's original lyrics were "Hey Jules," but he changed them because he thought Jude sounded better, better, better, BETTER.

A Swing and a Miss

I realized after reading some of the comments from last week's post that I might have come off a little cocky comparing myself to Sting. That wasn't my intent (I'd also remind everyone that Sting hasn't always been as good as he was with "Every Breath You Take"--anyone remember that song he did for the utterly forgettable Three Musketeers movie?).

Rather I wanted to point out that sometimes whether your writing songs for the masses or a gag for a handful of editors in the Church Office Building, sometimes you just know you've done your job.

And sometimes you're wrong. Sometimes you write "All for Love" and sometimes you submit the following gag:
I still like it, though.

Kids These Days and Their Darn Phones

Originally, this joke just included the sacrifice bit, then I came up with the service line. It's like two jokes in one.
